A Free Woman's Journey to Love & Liberation: In Conversation with EbonyJanice Moore | Ep. 51 | The Prolific Hub Podcast

A Black woman holds her hands behind her head with her eyes closed and a faint smile

On this episode, I had the honor of speaking with the remarkable EbonyJanice Moore, a Hip-Hop womanist scholar, theologian, minister, author, and educator. Our conversation delves deep into what it means to be a "free woman on a love journey" and explores the vast intellectual landscape EbonyJanice has cultivated through her work. From the Free People Project, to her impactful book "All the Black Girls Are Activists," to the transformative Dream Yourself Free program, to Black Girl Mixtape and beyond, EbonyJanice's journey is a testament to the power of genuine intellectual engagement in a fast-paced digital world.

One of the key topics discussed in this episode is the concept of intellectual freedom. In a time when information is readily available at our fingertips, the ability to engage thoughtfully and critically with that information is more important than ever. EbonyJanice emphasizes the significance of recognizing one's intellectual lineage, a concept that encourages us to understand and acknowledge the thinkers and ideas that have shaped our own perspectives. This recognition not only honors the contributions of those who came before us but also enriches our own intellectual journeys by providing a deeper context for our thoughts and beliefs.

Our conversation also highlights the philosophy of being a master dreamer. EbonyJanice describes this as "the ability to envision and create a future that aligns with our highest selves." She underscores the importance of imagination in this process, noting that everything that exists in the physical world first began as an idea in someone's mind. By nurturing our capacity to dream and imagine, we can actively participate in the creation of our own realities. This concept is particularly powerful in the context of activism, as it encourages individuals to envision and work towards a world that reflects their values and aspirations.

EbonyJanice's background in the Black church and her identification with womanism are also explored in depth. Growing up in a Southern Black Baptist church, she had the unique experience of being supported and encouraged by her pastor, Pastor Henry, who created space for her to flourish and express herself. This formative experience laid the groundwork for her later identification with womanism, a term coined by Alice Walker to describe a form of feminism that centers the experiences and contributions of Black women. For EbonyJanice, womanism provided a language and framework that resonated deeply with her own experiences and beliefs.

The intersection of womanism and spirituality is a recurring theme in EbonyJanice's work. She shares how her spiritual practices, which include meditation, visualization, altar work and beyond, support her in maintaining clarity and focus. She describes these practices as "power tools" that help her to navigate the challenges of daily life and stay connected to her highest self. By setting boundaries and creating intentional routines, she is able to cultivate a sense of peace and purpose that guides her actions and decisions.

In addition to her personal practices, EbonyJanice also speaks to the broader implications of these ideas for society as a whole. She argues that our ability to think critically and dream expansively is essential for addressing the complex challenges of our time. By fostering a culture of intellectual engagement and imaginative thinking, we can create a more just and equitable world. This broader vision is reflected in EbonyJanice's various projects, like the Free People Project and Dream Yourself Free.

Throughout the episode, EbonyJanice's passion for her work and her commitment to her values are evident. She speaks candidly about the obstacles she has faced and the lessons she has learned along the way, offering valuable insights and inspiration for listeners. Whether you are familiar with her work or new to her ideas, this conversation is sure to leave you feeling enlightened and inspired.

My conversation with EbonyJanice is a rich exploration of intellectual freedom, the power of dreaming, and the importance of thoughtful engagement in our digital age. Her insights into the significance of recognizing one's intellectual lineage and her philosophy of being a master dreamer provide valuable guidance for anyone seeking to navigate the complexities of modern life. By embracing these ideas and practices, we can cultivate a deeper understanding of ourselves and our world, and actively participate in the creation of a more liberated society.
